Cap Blanc Nez

About

Very impressive feeling to be on that nearly 20 kilometers beach followed by a single vertical cliff... surfing can be fun, too, paddling across those giant sand banks.
Chances are you'll be alone : water temperatures make it a real North surf experience.

Atmosphere:
Sand banks here are enormous : 100 to 200 meters long with HEAVY CURRENTS. Take care of yourself, if you surf here alone, make sure you're a good swimmer enough ! Waves usually break when the sea goes over those banks and if conditions are good, nice peeling 1.5 meter waves can be surfed.
Also, while surfing or walking :
STAY AWAY FROM THE CLIFF !
Those collapse frequently and you don't want to see what it makes to be buried under tons of rocks. Keep an eye on your family/friends and if you hear a big CRRRRRUNCH : run in the opposite direction !
(Yeah, and that's not a joke)

Additional Info:
Access to this spot is easy but weather conditions to get some rideable waves are a bit more difficult...
Wait for big WINTER GALES to come around and send NORTH SWELL, then wait for the wind to calm down.
Surf is also possible with West swell but poorer and much less interesting.

From the main city around, Calais, follow road D940 toward Boulogne. After the small city of Sangatte, check out a high tower with tourism signs indicating 'Cap Blanc Nez' and 'Beach'.
The high tower is a World War 1 memorial and the access to the beach is on the left (South) side of it. From atop the cliff you're 33 meters higher than sea level and this is a fabulous point of view !
